Do you need to file for tax return when your income is below the tax free threshold?

Yes. You do need to file for a tax return even if you income is below the tax free threshold. In the tax return, not only do you need to declare your assessable income, but you need to declare whether there is any capital gain, any foreign income and foreign asset over 50,000. If you do not lodge your tax return, and declaring to the Australian Taxation Office, then ATO will not know. There would be a penalty of failure to lodge penalty, and ATO can impose that on you if you are late or do not lodge your tax return on time, the penalty is nearly $1000 per incident of late lodgment or non lodgment 

Is failure to lodge your tax return a summary criminal offence?

Yes. Failure to lodge your tax return is a summary criminal offence. It is punishable by 1 year in jail and it is administered by 8C of the Taxation Administration Act 1953. Normally it will result in conviction, and it is an absolute liability offence. This means that ATO does not have to prove why you did not lodge, but the mere fact that you did not lodge is a crime. Your tax file number has a unique 9 digit numbers. The tax file number will in general stay with you for the rest of your life. 

What happens to the home office running expense in FY2024?

The short cut method of the home office running expense has finished in Fy2024, hence you can not use the 80 cents per hour short cut method in the Fy2024. However, the budget had introduced the modified short cut method, which is the 64 cents per hour method, and one of the unique aspect of this method is that you will be able to claim those mobile phone and internet expenses which you can claim using the short curt method.  

Who will pay for the Medicare levy surcharge?

The Medicare Levy Surcharge is applicable for those high income earners, hence if your income is 90,000 and combined reportable adjustable income is over 180,000, and you do not have the relevant private hospital cover to cover for the Medicare levy surcharge, then you need to pay those additional 1%, 1.5% to 2% of the reportable adjusted income to cover that.
